A project of superlatives for the energy infrastructure
In order to protect the population from the worst consequences of the ongoing climate catastrophe, Germany is working on accelerating the expansion of greenhouse gas emission-free energy generation plants. However, clean electricity cannot always be generated exactly where it is consumed. This is precisely why efficient grid infrastructures are crucial to the success of the energy transition.
With the project A-North Work is underway on the construction of a 300-kilometre underground cable route, which connects wind farms on the North Sea coast with the population and industrial centres in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. This will create a central link for the transport of renewable energy - a truly superlative project.
The role of M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - a member of the SIERA Alliance
As part of this major project M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - Part of SIERA Alliance for the Hydrogeological construction supervision of the entire route entrusted with the project. The intervention in the subsurface over a distance of several hundred kilometres, divided into several construction sections of around one kilometre each, some of which are being worked on in parallel, brings with it a whole host of hydrogeological challenges.
The responsibility of M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - a member of the SIERA Alliance - includes the technical support of all hydrologically relevant processes along the route. The aim is to accompany construction site operations in a hydrogeologically safe, legally compliant and environmentally friendly manner.
Open construction and its hydrogeological requirements
Where the route runs through the so-called open construction is erected - i.e. by means of an excavation pit along the cable route - it is always necessary, depending on the local conditions, to Lowering the groundwater level, to create a dry and safe work surface.
The pumped water must be treated carefully. This includes in particular
- the monitoring of chemical water quality,
- the treatment of the water if required,
- the prudent discharge into surrounding waters capable of absorbing it.
These measures are essential in order to carry out the construction work safely and at the same time minimise potential impacts on ground and surface waters. This is precisely where M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - Part of SIERA Alliance its hydrogeological expertise.
Hydrogeological construction monitoring along the entire route
Monitored during the construction phase M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - Member of the SIERA Alliance all aspects of hydrology with regard to their conformity with legal and official regulations. The team on site registers the levels of the discharge waters, takes samples and documents any potential risks to groundwater or surface water at an early stage if these could arise from construction site operations.
The central tasks include
- Registration of discharge water levels
- Sampling to check the water quality
- Early documentation of potential risks
- Monitoring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
- Hydrogeological assessment of ongoing construction processes
This continuous monitoring ensures that environmental requirements are not only assessed retrospectively, but are actively integrated into the ongoing construction process.
Coordination, modelling and data evaluation in the back office
In addition to the work in the field, coordination in the background also plays an important role. In the back office M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - Member of the SIERA Alliance A triumvirate of project managers is responsible for coordinating the on-site staff, making adjustments to the existing hydrogeological modelling where necessary and evaluating the data stream produced.
This combination of on-site presence, model adaptation and data evaluation is crucial in order to be able to react quickly and professionally to changes in the construction process or in the hydrogeological conditions.
Overview of the hydrogeological tasks in the A-North project
| Hydrogeological task area | Description of the | Goal |
| Accompanying groundwater lowering | Support for dry and safe work surfaces in open construction | Safe construction process |
| Monitor water quality | Checking the chemical quality of the pumped water | Protection of water bodies and compliance with regulations |
| Treat water as required | Professional treatment before initiation | Environmentally friendly implementation |
| Check discharge waters | Registration of fill levels and water conditions | Avoidance of overloading |
| Document risks | Early detection of potential impacts on groundwater and surface waters | Preventive water protection |
| Analysing data and adapting models | Ongoing hydrogeological assessment of the construction process | Sound project management |
A living contribution to the energy transition
For M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - a member of the SIERA Alliance - and its employees, actively helping to shape the energy transition is a matter close to their hearts. It is the living expression of the motto „Engineering for a Better Tomorrow“, which provides expertise and passion for the preservation of the basis of life for all of us.
With its involvement in the A-North project M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Nord - Member of the SIERA Alliance, how hydrogeological expertise contributes to the responsible implementation of critical infrastructure projects. Where energy transition, construction practice and water protection come together, support is needed that understands technical requirements and environmental responsibility in equal measure.
