Investigation of a suspected old landfill site from historical research and orientating investigation to basic waste characterisation and risk assessment - using the example of a site in Leer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Hannover - Member of the SIERA Alliance<\/strong> was commissioned with the detailed investigation of a site in Leer as part of a planned construction project. The aim was to clarify whether known old deposits from the surrounding area protrude into the area and whether previous or current uses could potentially have led to soil or groundwater contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article provides an insight into the structured approach of the M&P Engineering Company Hanover<\/strong> - from historical research and orientational investigation to basic waste characterisation and initial risk assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1. historical research: the basis for any reliable assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning, historical documents were systematically compiled and analysed. These included in particular<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • historical maps<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Aerial photographs from different eras<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Multi-temporal analyses of land use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The analysis showed that it was not possible to completely exclude possible extensions of a neighbouring old landfill to the south. This resulted in an immediate need for investigation, which the M&P Engineering Company Hanover<\/strong> subsequently deepened in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. exploratory investigation: small pile-drilling, excavator trenching and groundwater sampling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Based on the results of the research, a targeted exploration of the underground was carried out. This involved<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          These findings confirmed the suspicion that parts of the historical deposits extend into the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          3. waste analysis and analysis in accordance with the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Analytical results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The consistency of the pollutant patterns was remarkable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • Similar pollutant profile<\/strong> in:\n
                  \n
                • of the deposit sample<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • of the immediately neighbouring groundwater sample<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  This suggests that the landfill residues may have produced a Pollutants entering the groundwater<\/strong> takes place.

                      5. necessity of a detailed examination (DU)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      In order to be able to conclusively assess whether a hazard exists in accordance with the BBodSchV, a Detailed examination (DU)<\/strong> required. This should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      • the Origin of the contamination<\/strong> clearly determine<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • the Soil-groundwater impact pathway<\/strong> analyse in depth<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • a resilient Hazard assessment at the place of assessment<\/strong> enable<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • Creating a data basis for possible measures or reorganisation concepts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                        The M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Hannover - Member of the SIERA Alliance<\/strong> will once again apply a structured, standardised procedure in order to create clarity for the client and the planned construction project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        The study shows: Historical deposits can have environmental relevance even decades later. The M&P Ingenieurgesellschaft Hannover - Member of the SIERA Alliance<\/strong> has created a sound basis for further evaluation through structured research, targeted field surveys and standardised analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        One Detailed investigation<\/strong> is now the next necessary step in order to be able to conclusively assess the risk situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
